Against Simplicity

The Unsettled Vision

Project: Against Simplicity

2016 Srishti School of Art, Design & Technology, Bangalore-India

" What we see and what we know is never settled." - John Berger

The unsettled vision presents a series of quirky, unrealistic & morbid illustrations. Ads usually have various ways of showing us an alternate lifestyle experience when a product is introduced. when it comes to publicity images for example, magazines, billboards etc. the act of representing there products are surreal and almost fiction like. the attention is directed to the product just by playing with poses, gestures, expressions. if we take the product away, we are just left with these forms, which are strong enough to have an alternate interpretation.

Ways Of Seeing

By John Berger

PROJECT PROPOSAL:

The aim of this college project was to choose text within a written document such as a book and work with it by interpreting the text into different visual form. Though it seems easy, selecting the text was the challenging part as I wasn't prepared to look at an outcome or form to create. Fortunately my interest in print publication gave me an idea of which direction to head in. With the help of suggested library boo stores to visit by Alison (faculty), I settled on the book " Ways Of Seeing" by

John Berger.

This Project gives the advantage to interpret the text we choose in our own way and take it to a more complex frame. This is done by analyzing and critiquing a simplified form into a more complex manner. The interpretation of text is translated into a visual form that gives another direction for the viewer to look at. This visual form can be done through various disciplines of illustrations, mixed media etc.

This course helps us bring meaning to the text we choose to work on by looking at an alternative view. It teaches us how in design we eliminate certain things when we simplify it's form and how one's voice can be lost. In the context of this project, we are required to read an article, a book, a journal or blog of our interest and reinterpret the text with the help of adequate research supporting our visual form.

in this course I was expected to look at different mediums to explore. As a graphic designer and artist, this project helped me develop a visual sense in any industry I work for.
